*The Ed Hardy clothing line that was being developed by Michael Jackson and Ed Hardy designer Christian Audigier was revealed on NBC's "Today" show Tuesday. With over 100 designs already approved by Michael, the collection was set to include a rhinestone glove and socks, a red jacket, Ed Hardy shirts, a belt and umbrellas, according to the report on "Today." Audigier now hopes to work with Michael Jackson’s estate to release the line, but nothing is finalized. Ed Hardy Designer Christian Audigier Talks Jon Gosselin, Michael Jackson

Ed Hardy designer Christian Audigier knew Michael Jackson. He partied with Michael Jackson. And Jon Gosselin is no Michael Jackson. At least not when it comes to people he had plans to collaborate with on potential Ed Hardy clothing lines. (Among any number of other distinctions.) Despite reports to the contrary, spurred on by an Audigier-funded trip to St.-Tropez for Gosselin and girlfriend Hailey Glassman, the T-shirt purveyor tells E! News that the only celebrity he ever discussed going into business with was the King of Pop. "I invited him to my birthday," Audigier says of Jackson. "And he showed up. It was his last public appearance. He was testing [the public mood about him] at my party. So we became friends. He told me one day he would like to collaborate with me on a collection." A binding contract if ever there was one. Too bad no such deal ever existed with The Lying Channel's No. 1 dad. "I never said I was going to do a line with Jon Gosselin. I don't want to do a line with Jon Gosselin." Well, not this week, anyway... "Jon is going to give me a visit in Las Vegas because there is a trade show, Magic," Christian Audigier says, adding that he was open to the idea of a collaboration, but not on a much-rumored children's line, as he doesn't "want to use their kids to wear my clothes." "He is going to come...a week from today, and he is going to become more familiar with the product." And, we presume, pose for a photo or two along the way. But their frequent conversations have never quite crossed over from personal to professional. "He calls me every two days to see what is going on. He is talking about his kids a lot." As for other jobs Gosselin doesn't have but seems to think he does: Audigier says that, despite appearances, the reality dad is not a paid spokesman for his Ed Hardy clothing brand. (Though he has been the recipient of a seemingly endless gift box and is, like it or not, the brand's unofficial ambassador.) He may soon go pro with his shilling, however, and become a spokesman for another Ed Hardy offshoot. We think. "He is really into bikes, so he want to do something around bikes so he can be the spokesperson for one of my brands on bikes." Now that that's all cleared up... About the photo op that started it all, Audigier says he originally flew Gosselin and Glassman to France earlier this summer simply because "he was wearing a lot of Christian Christian Audigier every day, so I said, 'I want to meet this guy.'" "I just invite him because I see him on the Jon & Kate show asking for job. So I was curious to see what he was asking people for which kind of job." Apparently, Audigier's viewing of Jon & Kate Plus 8 was a one-time-only deal, as evidenced by his bafflement over Gosselin's plus-one for the trip. Upon accepting Audigier's invitation, the reality dad took it upon himself to request a second ticket. "He told me he was coming with his stylist. It appeared his stylist was Hailey. A week after, I discovered those two guys were together. I didn't even know that Jon and Kate were not together." Well, we knew there had to be someone. Is McSteamy's Naked Tape Partner Pulling a Jon Gosselin?

First Jon Gosselin, now Kari Ann Peniche. Ed Hardy designer Christian Audigier certainly seems to be surrounding himself with the cream of the crap.Uh, crop. We meant crop. Peniche, the clothes-averse costar of Eric Dane and Rebecca Gayheart, made her way, as all good tabloid targets do, over to Audigier's studios yesterday, and while she left with the impression that she landed herself a design gig, she may be in for a rude awakening when she turns up for orientation at Ed Hardy HQ tomorrow morning. A source close to Christian Audigier denied reports of any collaboration with Peniche, a budding swimwear designer, saying "those are just rumors." Now if only we could track down where they first started…oh, that's right. "I'm gonna be working on a bikini line," Peniche told paparazzi yesterday. "I start on Friday." Yeah, that's probably what Gosselin thought, too. Whatever Happened To Ed HardyTotally unexpected, it contained the first Ed Hardy helmet I'd ever seen, with a bitchin' flaming-tiger graphic on each side. It wasn't until I spun it around to the front that I got indignant. "By Christian Audigier," it read in large letters below the Ed Hardy logo. What the fcuk?! (Cue cryptic design house reference.) Why would a biker want some French fashion designer's name scrawled across his forehead? How do you say "douche" in French anyway? Oh wait, that is a French word... Ironically, not long thereafter the Ed Hardy folks paid a visit to our offices to show us their new line of motorcycle accessories--helmets, jackets, gloves, boots, billet parts, graphics, tie-downs, the works--all embossed with the work of famed California tattoo artist Don Ed Hardy. They then bussed us cross-town to their headquarters, where we had a meet-and-greet with Christian Audigier himself. Their offices were the kind of creative space I wish we had here at the magazine, and the boss' digs ... let's just say the word "opulent" doesn't do them justice. Everything was painted white except the walls, covered in alligator skin. And everywhere you looked were vintage and custom motorcycles, most with the Christian Audigier logo painted on their gas tanks. As one attendee put it, "Clearly the guy doesn't have any self-esteem issues." Be that as it may, it turns out the guy is a bike guy. "I grew up in France, so of course I rode motorcycles as transportation," Audigier reveals. And now, on the heels of his success hawking Von Dutch and Ed HardyEd Hardy shirts--and, coming soon, Evel Knievel!--he's delved into the bike business, offering the aforementioned gear and partnering with various bike builders. First came a Yamaha quad, then a Suzuki Hayabusa, and now the Ducati Monster shown here, offered as part of a 25-unit run of customs that will also include Hypermotards, Streetfighters and 1198s. Maybe the guy's not a douche after all?As for the real Don Ed Hardy, like the Dread Pirate Roberts he's been retired for years, overseeing and mentoring the artists at his San Francisco studio, Tattoo City. Von Dutch wasn't as fortunate: He died of a stomach abscess caused by alcoholism in 1992. Ed hardy is fake strawberryPerfumers and flavorists share many raw materials (a lot of the things in your Diors and Laurens are food grade), and what Audigier has bottled, you can find in the cake mix aisle at D’Agostino.I say Audigier advisedly. Technically, this sugary elixir is attributed to a perfumer, Caroline Sabas. To say that her prodigious talents are wasted here is to misunderstand entirely the marketing premise. Obviously Audigier wanted fake strawberry, and that’s what Sabas gave him. (It’s nice as far as fake strawberry goes, incidentally — probably Sabas’s contribution.) And if you’re wearing your awesome Ed Hardy T-shirt, size small, you’ll probably buy a bottle because the packaging design matches. But it’s not good. Not strangely beautiful. And not substantive. His clothes — innovative, elaborate pieces of draped and billowing fabric — sold for vast sums. In 1911, Poiret launched his perfume collection, named for his oldest daughter, Rosine. The Chanel people chafe when it’s mentioned, but I believe Poiret indeed preceded Coco Chanel by a decade as the first fashion designer to launch a fragrance. He was in debt, his business partners abandoned him. The house closed in 1929. Poiret died in poverty. In the late 20th century, a woman named Marie-Helène Rogeon became interested in reviving Poiret’s Ed Hardy. Ed Hardy Shop is a frequent museumEd Hardy brand is a phenomenon that is, in the context of today’s pop culture, instinctively logical: Here is Hardy, an artist who works in one of the stranger art forms — tattoos. Quite elaborate — and on perhaps the strangest of all art media — human skin, still alive, thank you very much And were you to acquire one of his works of art, you could virtually guarantee a marvelous explosion from your parents. Thus the explosion of the brand. (When I was in Mexico City a few months ago, you couldn’t throw a Dos Equis without hitting a massive Ed Hardy billboard.) On the other hand, were your parents familiar with the depth of Hardy’s artistry, they might applaud your investment acumen. Web shop of Audigier’s Hardy-exploitation wear has a list of registered trademarks as long as your arm. You can’t get a Hardy tattoo, But you can buy the T-shirt. More axiomatic still are the perfumes. Oh, but you saw that coming a mile away. Audigier has creative-directed two pairs — a feminine and a masculine each — and one wonders if Hardy smelled them before they left the factory. I realize these things are critic-proof (Macy’s can’t keep them on the shelves), but here we go. Take Audigier’s most recent launches, in December of 2008: Love & Luck for Women and Love & Luck for Men. For the feminine, Adriana Medina has created a very nice copy of Olivier Cresp’s Light Blue (the feminine) for Dolce & Gabbana, simply lowering the volume almost to zero on the green apple (which is what makes Light Blue so good) and substituting a very light, rather diaphanous spice. It’s a nice scent, not a full-fledged perfume as much as a well-executed initial sketch, but this works perfectly for Hardy’s demographic: mass-market teenagers. Ed Hardy Shop precisely gives the perception of wearing scent without actually wearing much. It’s also the best of the four. (It has decent persistence on skin; on the other hand, it diffuses like lead.) Love & Luck for Men, by Olivier Gillotin, is equally perfect: the masculine cliché of deodorant soap, aluminum and synthetic spice. Mennen Speed Stick on 17-year-old. Commercially savvy and of no interest at all. Good persistence, sadly. Ed Hardy for Men, the original masculine that debuted 11 months prior, is Gillotin doing another version of the masculine cliché: subtract some of the aluminum et voilà. Hardy’s tattoo apprenticeship was apparently carried out while earning a San Francisco Art Institute B.F.A. in printmaking. He studied traditional Japanese tattoo art in Japan, and his strange work became strangely beautiful and substantive. He has with his wife written, edited and published numerous books on alternative art while curating gallery and nonprofit exhibitions, and is a frequent museum and university lecturer.

Hollister stores For Abercrombie & Fitchhave always liked Abercrombie Fitch clothes. I guess you would call me an Abercrombie guy. I am the type of guy they try so hard to portray in clothing magazines. I am in a fraternity, I lift weights, and I enjoy the brotherly camaraderie of other males as much as the affection of attractive women. I guess you could call me an all around mans man. The great thing about going to an Abercrombie and Fitch outlet store is that you can save a lot of money without sacrificing fashion sense. Abercrombie Fitch outlets, like any other clothing outlets stock The same clothing at a reduced price. There are many different reasons why they reduce prices at outlet stores. Sometimes, you are buying last years clothing for a remarkable markdown. Other times, you simply get to save a little bit of money by going to a more central location. Outlets stores are so big and do so much traffic that, on a per item basis, they cost a lot less to operate. Some of these savings are passed on to the consumer. The Abercrombie Fitch outlet is actually not very close to where I live. I am in a small college town, and as such there is not really an Abercrombie Fitch store in town. It is about three hours drive, not a small trip by any standard. That is why I get together with my fraternity brothers once a month and take a trip out to the outlet store Hollister has secured a 8,200-ft² store at Victoria Square, joining names such as Cruise, Ted Baker, Reiss, Firetrap, All Saints, Urban Outfitters, Top Shop, River Island, H&M and Levis. Multi Development, who developed Victoria Square, recently announced that Kurt Geiger and the new denim brand J Four, have also signed for stores within the 850,000-ft² scheme anchored by House of Fraser. Multi Development UK’s Director of Leasing, Stuart Harris said, “Signing the first Hollister store for Ireland is a great coup for Victoria Square and further endorses the scheme’s quality and position as the number one destination for fashion conscious Northern Islanders. Since opening in March 2008 Victoria Square’s following has continued to grow as it matures and settles in the Belfast and Northern Ireland shoppers psyche. The scheme has also hugely benefited from trade from Southern Ireland due to the strength of the Euro against the pound and this will be another strong pull.” A Hollister representative said, “We’re excited to bring our Irish fan-base their first Hollister store where they can go and experience the brand first hand. Hollister is all about the fantasy of Southern California. We’re bringing SoCal to Ireland!” Hollister is a lifestyle brand that embodies Southern California and operates over 500 stores across the globe, in addition to hollisterco.com. Hollister is a division of Abercrombie & Fitch (NYSE: ANF), a leading specialty retailer founded in 1892. With over 1,100 stores across the world, Abercrombie & Fitch offers five distinct lifestyles through its Abercrombie & Fitch, abercrombie, Hollister Co., Ruehl, and Gilly Hicks divisions. In a move that surprised nobody, Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) today announced plans to shutter its struggling 29-store Ruehl chain by the end of the year. Perhaps the chain’s offerings were out of step with the times. Ruehl sought to define “the aspirational Greenwich Village lifestyle” with high-priced “signature styles” of clothing. The names of its products invoked a trendy kind of sophistication that the New York City neighborhood is known for; “One Night Stand,” “Buying Drinks” and “Chance Encounter” pocketbooks went for $298, while jeans sold for $118 and a pair of leather flip-flops fetched $50. Ruehl generated a pre-tax operating loss of about $58 million for the fiscal year ended January 31, 2009, including a non-cash impairment charge of approximately $22 million. In a statement, Mike Jeffries, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Abercrombie & Fitch Co., said he was disappointed that the chain was closing. “It has been a difficult decision to close Ruehl, a brand we continue to believe could have been successful in different circumstances,” Jeffries said in a press release. Wall Street criticized Abercrombie & Fitch for taking so long to close Ruehl. Abercrombie took a $51 million impairment charge related to Ruehl in the first quarter and will have to charge off an additional $65 million over the rest of the year. Same-store sales at Ruehl fell 33 percent in May alone. The company also announced that it has amended its existing credit agreement to exclude from its calculation of the minimum coverage and maximum leverage ratios up to $61 million of the estimated $65 million of additional pre-tax charges associated with exiting Ruehl. Abercrombie & Fitch also agreed to a reduction in the amount of available credit to $350 million from $450 million, an increase in the facility fee and borrowing costs, and a capital expenditure limit of $600 million for the 2009 and 2010 fiscal years, including not more than $275 million for fiscal 2009. A student who worked for U.S. retailer Abercrombie & Fitch Co. in London said Wednesday she was discriminated against because she has a prosthetic arm. Riam Dean is seeking up to 25,000 pounds ($41,000) in damages at an employment tribunal. Dean, a 22-year-old law student at the University of London, told the tribunal she worked at Abercrombie’s store on London’s posh Saville Row and had been given permission to wear a sweater to cover her prosthetic arm. After a few days Dean said she was told she was breaking the company’s “look policy” and was asked to work in the stockroom. Dean said the company gave new employees a thick guidebook dictating everything from how employees should wear their hair to the length of their fingernails. “I have worn a prosthetic arm since I was 3 years old,” she said. “It was part of me, not a cosmetic.” Abercrombie & Fitch said in a statement it “has a strong anti-discrimination and anti-harassment policy.” It said Dean’s account of what happened was inaccurate. The New Albany, Ohio-based company is known for its edgy advertisements and shops with nightclub atmosphere. It has faced criticism in the past by those who claim it deliberately selects young, good-looking people to work in its stores. In 2004 it spent $50 million to settle a number of employment discrimination lawsuits in the United States. The hearing began Wednesday and is expected to last for three days. A women with a prosthetic limb who says she was made to work in the stockroom by trendy clothes retailer Abercrombie & Fitch is bringing a disability discrimination claim, according to the BBC website. Twenty-two year-old law student Riam Dean was born with a missing left forearm. She claims that Abercrombie & Fitch initially allowed her to wear a cardigan, but she was later moved from the shop floor and made to work in the stockroom when the company’s “visual team” found that her appearance (on the Daily Mail website) did not adhere to its strict “look policy”. Miss Dean, who says she felt “diminished” and “humiliated”, is seeking around £20,000 for disability discrimination. Abercrombie & Fitch is disputing her version of events. Did you know that there was a publicly traded company out there that dictates what its employees look like? And I’m not talking about a dress code, although the clothing company in question does that too. Fingernails have to be kept a certain length and hairstyles have to be maintained to employee handbook perfection. That is, unless you’re working in the back. Then you don’t have to have “the look,” because, who cares? You can’t frighten away the customers with your short brown hair - or God forbid! - size 6 waistline. At least Abercrombie & Fitch (NYSE: ANF) can say one thing about their hiring tactics… they don’t discriminate against women per se. You won’t find any men less than model perfect there either. If you have teenaged kids or are young at heart, you’ve probably stepped inside an Abercrombie (sadly, in typical conversation, poor Fitch gets completely left out) store before. And if you have, then you’ve probably met Malibu Barbie and Ken, along with Fun-In-The-Sun Skipper… at every single store. It’s a very consistent company when it comes to both boring apparel and equally boring models/salespeople. Incidentally, they’re usually not all that friendly either from what I’ve experienced.
Strangely Beautiful & Substantive Ed Hardy ShirtsTake Audigier’s most recent launches, in December of 2008: Love & Luck for Women and Love & Luck for Men. simply lowering the volume almost to zero on the green apple (which is what makes Light Blue so good) and substituting a very light, rather diaphanous spice. It’s a nice scent, not a full-fledged perfume as much as a well-executed initial sketch, but this works perfectly for Hardy’s demographic: mass-market teenagers. It precisely gives the perception of wearing scent without actually wearing much. Obviously Audigier wanted fake strawberry, and that’s what Sabas gave him. Paul Poiret was the Yves Saint Laurent of his day. In the early 1900s, he threw extravagant parties and became so famous that he was invited to show his collection at the British Prime Minister’s residence. The Chanel people chafe when it’s mentioned, but I believe Poiret indeed preceded Coco Chanel by a decade as the first fashion designer to launch a fragrance. When Poiret hung up his uniform after World War I, he found the house — then in competition with the clean-lined, sporty new designers like Chanel — almost bankrupt. He was in debt, his business partners abandoned him. In the late 20th century, a woman named Marie-Helène Rogeon became interested in reviving Poiret’s scents. { Last Page } { Page 1 of 2 } { Next Page } |
